TRANSPORT SCENARIO  OF MANDYA DISTRICT

Mandya is an important district of the state, consisting of 7 taluks, mainly depending on agriculture economy. It is located about 100 km from Bangalore on Bangalore-Mysore state high way. It has a population of  17.61 lakhs,  with  65% of literacy rate (2001 census). The annual average rain fall in the district is about 700 mm. The district has national high way (29  km),  state high way (244 km) and major district roads (about 1400 km). It also has many tourist places and pilgrimage centres viz., Srirangapatna, K.R.Sagar, Shimsha and Melukote. The transport in the district assumes importance in developing the district’s economy, as public transport is being used by people for mixed purposes- by work force, students and others for jathras, attending weddings, etc. The district has three sugar factories, for which sugarcane is transported by bullock carts, tractors and trucks from the field. The district has a total of about 60,000 vehicles (2000-01) registered and kept for use, of which 80% of the are two wheelers.  Among the 7 taluks, Mandya has about 50% of the total vehicles. About 42,000 driving licenses have been issued. The revenue collected was about Rs. 7.5 Crore during the year 2000-01. As the district is a tourist place, improving the transport infrastructure is a need of the hour.

 

FUNCTIONS OF REGIONAL TRANSPORT OFFICE

 

Following are the important functions of Regional Transport Office in its jurisdiction;

     Transport management in the region

     Registration of motor vehicles for use on road

     Issue of license to motor vehicle drivers and conductors

     Issue of fitness certificate to motor vehicles

     Issue of permits to transport vehicles, viz., buses, trucks and  autorikshaws.

     Issue of licenses and control of motor driving Schools

     Collection of tax, fee, penalty and fine related to motor vehicles

     Enforcement of the Motor Vehicle Act, Taxation Act and Rules

     Conducting Camps in taluks for issuing LL, DL, FC and for registration of  vehicles

     Accident control and road safety

NUMBER OF DRIVING SCHOOLS AND EMISSION TEST CENTRES

There are only three driving schools in the region, two are located in the city and one is located in the Bharathi Nagar, about 20 km from the city. There is only one emission testing centre, for both petrol and diesel engines, located in the city.
